Meet the artist

Where my art began.

Hi, I’m Laura Clots — a Dutch watercolor artist based in Aruba. I’m self-taught, and everything I paint comes from a deep love for color, the ocean, and the nature around me. My paintings are bright and detailed, often filled with little discoveries. I never try to paint things exactly as they are — I paint how they feel.

โ€‹

During my BSc in Physical Therapy studies on Aruba, I had a very kind scuba instructor — he took me diving, and a couple of years later he became my husband. I still remember the sunlight on the corals, seeing the waves from underneath, and the calm fish all around me. From that moment, I knew I wanted to paint that feeling, and it never really left me.

โ€‹

For a long time, I couldn’t quite capture what I saw underwater. I was used to a very controlled way of working — drawing with markers on scrapbook paper — until I began experimenting more loosely with watercolor. Letting the colors flow, watching them mix and build in soft, layered rhythms.

โ€‹

Only later in the process comes the precision: placing the corals and the fish, and finishing with my favorite gold and gel pens — something I’ve loved since I was a kid. Each print begins as an original watercolor, built up in transparent layers and finished with care.

โ€‹

I now work as a full-time artist, fully dedicated to exploring color, depth, and the quiet energy of the sea.

โ€‹

Over time, I’ve found my own style with patience, curiosity, and passion. Watercolor keeps surprising me; no piece ever turns out the same, and that’s exactly what I love about it.
